Narrative
After the events of “Batman” (2022), Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, tries to seize the reins of the underworld in Gotham. Colin Farrell and Christine Milioti talk about how they got used to the image during the filming of “Penguin”. Colin Farrell fought hard for his version of the Penguin to smoke tobacco in Batman (2022), but to no avail. However, in his own series, the character is depicted as a casual tobacco user who prefers cigars.
The tone and atmosphere are absolutely accurately conveyed
An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Graham Norton & Guests features: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). Dirty, dirty and dark, but Farrell is able to capture that glimmer of charm that made Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano.
Where to start with Farrell
There is a similarity with a soprano, especially in tone. There is a lot of dark in this first episode, but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone without undermining it. Amazing is the right word. I love seeing talented star actors fully commit to roles like this, and the makeup/CG or whatever they did to physically turn him into a penguin, not only passes the eye test, but looks incredibly realistic.
And Farrell as an actor is completely immersed in this role
There is always a risk that if the make-up is not good enough or a little wrong, it can be completely distracting. In Penguin, it adds to his game and the overall quality of the show, because it’s such a damn good job. I may be a little biased because he was one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think this will bring him the praise he deserves. I never tune in to new shows at once, because I like to watch all the episodes at once, but I wanted to see how this show actually turned out.
