Narrative
A modern-day tale of the pursuit of fortune in the world of West Texas oil rigs. A landman, at least one who works in the oil industry, acts as a middleman between exploration companies and landowners. Typically, a landman’s job is to negotiate and finalize agreements with landowners who hold mineral rights to lease those rights to the company they represent.
As referenced on CBS News Sunday Morning: Episode 4424 (2022)
Essentially, they manage the land and secure leases so they can drill for oil and gas. Like a foreman on a construction site, they build roads, housing for workers (man camps), assemble excavators, and drill the wells themselves, especially in remote locations. They are also part of the repair team, problem solvers, and facilitators.
I’m sure you’ll find out which one!
Landman is my first Taylor Sheridan series, so I don’t have the expectations that seem to come from a Yellowstone fan. The main story so far is engaging and exciting without being too far-fetched. There are a couple of subplots that run well through the episodes, but perhaps one of them compromises the overall quality of the show.
The actors portray their characters well
The visual production is noteworthy; the direction and creation of the environment are to be enjoyed. It would be interesting to get the perspective of people who work in the field on how realistic the field scenes are. Billy Bob Thornton is exemplary and really leads the show well.
